Using Widgets and Themes on Your WordPress Website

This tutorial will teach you how to change your websites theme and how to use widgets. Begin by logging in to your dashboard at domain.com/wp-admin.
In the left-hand column of your dashboard, expand the Appearance menu. Click on themes. The “manage themes” tab will show you your current theme, as well as other themes that you have installed. To find and install new themes, click on the “install themes” tab.
On the Install Themes tab you can either search for themes based on keywords, author, or tags, or you can select specific features you are looking for. You can also search for themes that are featured, newest, or recently updated.

When your search results come up, you can either click on “install,” “preview,” or “details.” Clicking on preview will bring up a larger picture of what that theme looks like. If you click on details you can view information such as which version is available, when the theme was last updated, and how many times it has been downloaded. If you click on install, the theme will be installed to your dashboard.
Once the theme is installed, you can either preview it, activate it, or return to the theme installer. If you activate it, this will become your websites theme. If you click on return to theme installer, you will return to the theme search page.
Once you have installed the themes that you want, click again on “themes” in the column on the left-hand side of your dashboard. Click on the “manage themes” tab. The themes that youve downloaded will now appear under “available themes.” You can now activate any theme that appears under available themes.
Widgets are another way that you can customize the appearance of your website. A widget is an independent section of content that you can place in certain areas of your site depending on which theme you choose.
The “available widgets” section of the widgets page shows you all of the widgets that you can choose to use on your site. To use a widget, simply drag it over to the sidebar you wish to display it in.
Once you have done this, the widget will open into a menu that will allow you to adjust its settings. When you have modified the settings to your liking, be sure to click on the “save” button. When you click on save, the widget will become live on your website. You can remove the widget from your website by clicking on “delete.”
You can use the same widget multiple times, which is why you can give each widget a title. Giving your widgets a title is a good way to help you stay organized, but it is not required.
If you want to remove a widget but save its settings in case you want to use it again in the future, you can drag that widget down into the “inactive widgets” area on the widgets page. You can drag an inactive widget back to a sidebar at any time.
Keep in mind that different themes allow different widget sidebars. Some themes may allow you to use more widgets than others. While one theme may allow you to use widgets in five different sidebar areas, another theme may only allow you to use widgets in one sidebar.
Themes and widgets allow you to customize the appearance of your website even further than you can by adjusting your settings. Experiment with different themes and widgets until you find the right combination for your unique website!
