Online businesses are always looking for ways to bring traffic to their websites as without traffic they will have no business. It doesnt matter how great the website looks or how well the back end operations perform, if the business doesnt appear on search results pages, the business will sit idly by waiting for the closing bell to ring.
Search engines today are more selective in their results, looking for things on websites that are in tune with the search terms entered by the human users. In the past, search results could be fooled by unscrupulous web designers who would stuff keywords into their sites so that no matter what terms were entered the site would show up in the results, often to the users dismay.
Today, search spiders not only crawl the web looking for certain words, but also making sure those words are part of a website that is relevant to the terms being searched. Additionally, search engines look at the sites popularity, measured by the number of other relevant sites that link to it, as well as the number of relevant sites to which it links. Many websites now use keyword marketing to raise their rankings on search results by posting information related to the subject of their site.
This tells search engines that the information being sought can be found on certain sites, not just the keywords. Keeping the information updated and fresh, also tells them it is time to re-crawl the site and move it up or down on the rankings list.
